Amateur and professional golf players alike are obsessed with what the big winners have in their bag at the Majors every year. Let’s take a look at all the golfing equipment that was in the bags of the Major winners in 2022.
Our main observation was that there was a varied mix of clubs in the bags this year, which has made for interesting discussions as to whether ‘full bag club deals’ are best for the performance of the player.
What’s in the bag of the Major 2022 winners?
Augusta Masters 2022
Augusta National is where the Major season kicks off every year. It’s also where current World Number One, Scottie Scheffler continued his dominance. Scheffler signed a multi-year deal with TaylorMade in March 2022 and went on to win multiple events and qualify for the Presidents Cup team.
It’s no surprise then that TaylorMade makes up a large part of his bag, but he still had a mix of Srixon and Titleist clubs. In the bag was a: TaylorMade Stealth Plus driver, Stealth 3-wood, Srixon ZU85 3-iron, Srixon ZX7 4-iron, TaylorMade P7TW irons (5-PW), Titleist Vokey SM8 (50° & 56°), Titleist Vokey 2021 Proto (60°) and a Scotty Cameron Special Select Prototype.
PGA Championship
The PGA Championship was up next, and it was Justin Thomas who left Southern Hills Country Club with the Wanamaker Trophy in tow. Thomas has stuck by Titleist for most of his career and they helped him on his way to becoming a multi-Major winner. In the bag at Southern Hills, he had a: Titleist TSi3 driver, TS3 3-wood, 915 Fd 5-wood, T100 4-iron, 621.JT irons (5-9), Vokey SM9 (46°, 52°, 56°), Vokey Design WedgeWorks (60°) and a Scotty Cameron X5 Tour Prototype.
The most unusual thing about Thomas’ set up is the 915 Fd 5-wood, which was released in 2014. This further proves our theory that new doesn’t necessarily mean better.
US Open
Now this is where things become a little more interesting in terms of equipment. US Open Winner Matt Fitzpatrick has four different brands in the bag. Not being tied down to a club sponsor helped him build a golf bag that is entirely suited to his game, evidenced by his win at The Country Club. We always try to turn people away from brand loyalty when they come into our store as we’re all about finding the right clubs for your game.
In the bag was a: Titleist TSi3 driver, Ping G425 Max 3-wood, G410 7-wood, PING i210 4-iron, PING S55 irons (4-PW), Vokey SM9 (52°, 56°, 60°) and a Bettinardi DASS BB1 Flow Tour Dept.
This bag was a mix of new and old clubs, further highlighting the fact that some of the older ranges can still hold their own against the latest models.
The 150th Open Championship
The 150th Open Championship was the finale of the Major season, with Cameron Smith winning the coveted Claret Jug. It was a first Major victory for the Australian who has built on this season’s success after winning the unofficial 5th Major, the Players Championship.
Similarly to Thomas, Smith is a Titleist staff member, so uses the Titleist clubs throughout the bag apart from his trusty Mizuno 3-iron.
The clubs Smith used at St. Andrews were: Titleist TSR2 driver, TSi2 3-wood, Mizuno Pro Hi-Fli 3-iron, T100 irons (5-9), Vokey SM9 (46°, 52°, 56°), Vokey Design WedgeWork (60°) and a Scotty Cameron 009M Prototype.
