It’s an exciting time in golf at the moment. The transatlantic Solheim Cup will be held in Spain from the 22nd-24th September at Finca Cortesin, Andalusia. This all-female, biennial competition features the 12 best US female golfers from the LPGA, and the 12 best European players from the Ladies European Tour (LET), and it’s possibly the most highly coveted trophy in ladies’ professional golf.
Not only that, but the Ryder Cup is fast approaching, too. Held from 25th September to 1st October at Marco Simon Golf & Country Club, Rome, Italy, all eyes will be on Team Europe’s Rory McIlroy who already has four Ryder Cup wins under his belt since his debut in 2010. We’re all hoping that he will play his part in reclaiming the Cup from the United States this year.
We’ve already taken a deep dive into which golf clubs McIlroy is carrying in his bag right now, but he’s famous for his choice of drivers, so in this article we’re going to take a look at some highlights from his drivers over the years.
WITB driver special - Rory McIlroy’s drivers through the years
2007 - Titleist 907D2
McIlroy burst onto the professional scene way back in 2007, with a Titleist driver - the now infamous 907D2. It’s the first choice of 460cc drivers on the PGA Tour, and Titleist is always a trusted brand. The 907D2 has an enhanced MOI (Moment of Inertia) for better distance and shot control. Not a bad choice for his first year as a professional, and it certainly didn’t let him down.
2013 - Nike Covert Driver
In 2013, McIlroy signed a large endorsement deal with Nike, and this saw him hitting the course with a Nike Covert Driver. With a radical cavity back design, these big hitters generate less spin and offer plenty more forgiveness than previous versions. With an intuitive, adjustable hosel system (Flex Loft) it remains one of the most popular drivers today.
2014 - Nike VRS Covert 2.0
Sticking with Nike drivers, in 2014 McIlroy added a Nike VRS Covert 2.0 to his bag - one of the most iconic drivers in recent years. With a striking colour and excellent performance, it’s an enduring upgrade on previous Covert drivers.
2017 - Callaway Epic Driver
At the end of 2016, Nike announced that it was withdrawing from the golf club and equipment market, which opened up an opportunity for McIlroy to experiment with other drivers. Despite having no sponsorship from Callaway, he regularly played with the Callaway Epic Driver in 2017.
TaylorMade M2 Driver
Later that year he would sign a $100m endorsement deal with TaylorMade, shifting to the new TaylorMade M2 driver.
2022 - TaylorMade Stealth
More recently, McIlroy has been deploying the TaylorMade Stealth driver, but will he make any changes for the upcoming Ryder Cup? You can bet that we’ll be keeping an eye out and letting you know.
