Things To Know When Playing Golf In The Winter

Let's be honest, winter golf isn't for the faint hearted. It's wet, cold and sometimes downright miserable, for those of us that can't bare the thought of our clubs gathering dust for months, it's all about embracing the challenge. Winter golf is a different beast and if you're going to brave the conditions there are a few things you should know to make it worthwhile.

Dress like a pro (or at least stay warm)

This isn't the time to skimp on your wardrobe. Layers are your best mate, Start with a base layer, add a fleece or sweatshirt and finish with a waterproof jacket. Don't forget gloves, a warm hat and thick socks. Why not check out our collections of clothing and see if you can find yourself a bargain? If your rocking a pair of winter golf shoes even better. Slipping on a frosty tee box isn't a great look.

The ball doesn't go as far

It's a cruel truth, the cold air makes the ball fly shorter, Physics eh? You'll probably need to club up, especially on those long par 4s. It's not you, it's the weather. Don't let it get to you. Focus on contact, accept that you might not be hitting your usual distances.

Course conditions will test you

Winter courses are a bit like playing away to stoke on a tuesday night. Tough and barely anyone likes it. Tough fairways are softer, roughs are heavier and greens are slower (if they aren't already frozen solid) Embrace the grind, adjust your game. Chip a little firmer, Putt a little bolder and remember everyone else is in the same boat a nice way to think of it is it'll probably help improve your game.

Winter rules are your friend

Preffered lies? yes please. Winter rules are there to help you out. If your ball's plugged in the fairway or sitting in a patch of mud. Give yourself a break.

Invest in a good trolley or carry bag

Dragging a heavy cart through mud feels more like a punishment than a hobby. A lightweight carry bag or a sturdy trolley can make a massive difference. If you are carrying keep it light - Just the essentials No one needs six dozen balls weighing you down. Relax and keep your body from aching especially during the cold.
