What’s in the golf bag of Japanese PGA Tour player Hideki Matsuyama?

Born in 1992, Hideki Matsuyama is a Japanese golfer who’s currently sitting in 7th place in the Golf World Rankings. Regarded as the most successful Japanese golfer currently on the PGA Tour, among his many accolades he has 19 worldwide wins under his belt, and topped the leaderboard at the 2021 Masters tournament at Augusta.

In August 2024, Matsuyama took home a bronze medal in the Paris 2024 Olympics, so let’s take a look at the clubs that helped him get there.

Driver, 3 and 5-wood

As a Srixon staff player, Matsuyama chose a Srixon ZX5 Mk II LS driver (9.5 degrees). This low-spinning beauty delivers a strong and penetrating ball flight, with plenty of adjustability options. His 3-wood was a TaylorMade Qi10 (15 degrees), known for its sleek, clean looks and a great balance of forgiveness and distance. And as for the 5-wood, he went for the Cobra King RadSpeed Tour, a classic fairway and an enduring favourite on the golf course for professionals and amateurs alike.

For the driver, 3-wood and 5-wood he chose Graphite Design Tour AD DI8 TX shafts.

Irons, wedges and putter

It’s back to Srixon again for Matsuyama’s irons of choice, as he opted for the Srixon Z-Forged II (from a 4-iron through to pitching wedge). These irons are strong performers in the hands of golfers who know what they’re doing, with a spin that’s higher than average much like other blade irons, and a sole that has been designed to minimise digging. He switched to True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400 shafts for his irons, along with his wedges (the Cleveland RTX 4 Forged Prototype.

As for his putter, much like many other elite golfers, Scotty Cameron was his brand of choice, selecting the Newport 2 GSS for his precision shots on the green. And because the devil is so often in the detail, we should mention that Matsuyama played with a Srixon Z-Star XV ball and Iomic X grips.
