What’s in the golf bag of South African hotshot Ernie Els?

Born on 17th October 1969, South African golfer Ernie Els is a former world number one with over 70 victories under his belt, and among his accolades, he is one of only six golfers to have won both the US Open and The Open Championship twice! Thanks to his stature and his fluid golf swing, Els is affectionately known as ‘The Big Easy’, and now he mainly plays on the PGA Tour Champions. In 2009 he was added to the South African Golf Hall of Fame, and shortly afterwards in 2011 he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

H2: Ernie Els - world-class golfer, brand ambassador, and philanthropist

As a child, Ernie excelled in cricket, tennis and rugby, but it would be golf that eventually stole his heart. Throughout his glittering career, he has also made time for charitable endeavours, having set up the Els for Autism Foundation in 2009 with his wife Liezl and Marvin R Shanken. Even earlier, back in 1999, he founded the Ernie Els Foundation in South Africa, which offers education, help and golfing opportunities to young people from families of ‘limited resources’.

He’s joined golf brand XXIO as a board member and global brand ambassador, so as we take a peek into his current golf bag, you can expect to see this brand feature heavily! Let’s get stuck in.

What’s in Ernie Els’s golf bag?

A hybrid golf club exists to bridge the gap between a wood and an iron, offering the best of both worlds in terms of length, design and features. Since hybrids arrived on the market, they have almost completely negated the need to carry the lower-numbered irons (e.g. 1, 2 and 3-irons). It’s safe to say that pretty much every golfer these days will carry at least one hybrid in their golf bag.

Driver & fairway

First off, let’s take a look at Ernie’s current driver of choice – and it’s the XXIO 13 Driver (8.7 degrees). Perfect for moderate swing speeds (under 90mph), the XX10 13 is a golfing technology lover’s dream. It features a BiFlex face which gives a more rigid outer edge to the toe and heel (think of it as the outer frame of a trampoline!). It also boasts Dual ActivWing which is a system that uses aerodynamics to bring stability to the club face. The result? A nimble, powerful and loud club that stands out on the golf course, and which is very easy to swing with little effort.
As for his fairway, he’s sticking with XXIO and playing with the XXIO X 3-wood (14 degrees). Again, it’s great for players with moderate swing speeds and delivers remarkable forgiveness and consistent results with a great feel.

Irons & wedges

When it comes to his 2-5 irons, Els is using XXIO sister company Srixon ZX Mk II utility irons, and his 6-9 irons are Srixon ZX7 Mk II irons. Shifting his allegiance somewhat, his current wedge of choice is the Cleveland RTX 6 ZipCore Tour Rack.

Putter

Moving away from XXIO, Cleveland and Srixon, Ernie is opting to use a putter from Bloodline Golf (but he’s sticking with a Srixon golf glove!).
