FAQs: Golf irons

How do I choose a set of irons?
It’s a good idea to try a few different sets out, but you will need to pay attention to the shaft length depending on your height. Find out more about choosing the right iron set for you in our buyers’ guide to irons.
Which golf brands make the best iron sets?
Everyone has their personal favourites, but if you’re not sure then all of the ‘big four’ – PING, Titleist, Callaway and TaylorMade – do fantastic iron sets that are loved by everyone from recreational players right through to professionals.
Can I build a set of irons from a mix of individual irons?
No, we don’t recommend that at all. The reason for this is that every iron set has been calibrated so that they complement each other and you’re not left with a big gap in loft between irons. Always opt for an iron set which has a good spread of clubs that suit your game.
What’s a good set of irons for a beginner?
You’ll be looking for anything with maximum forgiveness, and this is usually achieved with a hollowed-out area at the back of the club (these are called cavity-backed irons). Strategically placed weights increase the club’s MOI (moment of inertia) which in turn leads to a straighter shot.
